Modern-Day Mephistopheles

SATIN-smooth promises that
SCOFF at the possibility of deceit, then

Unsinkable

CHILLy waters marked by silent sirens:
CREAK nor clang nor song do they sing.
CACHE of brute strength waiting, watching:
RIVET and bulkhead’s final cries ring.

Mundane

STRIP away the fabric hindrances,
STATE for the millionth time our desire––
WOOER embracing, wooed embraced; love is
FERAL, tenacious in the midst of mundanity.

Agate

AGATE is a crystalline canvas, a tie-dyed rock daubed with a paint-soaked

TOWEL and fine brushes, streaked with squeezed and shaken

SPURTs of colors from tubes and buckets. Even rock need not be mere bland

Baking

SUGAR and flour dusting apron and countertop alike, the
ELDER baker and her sous-chef granddaughter finished the cupcakes, having

BETELgeuse burns red, the Hunter’s

Poppy

CRYPT open to the air, the stench of
FLESH and blood and death clouds the horizon,
POISED to sow the seeds for a field full of
POPPY and heartache.

Adhesive

VOCAL and nagging, your fears
PRESS into your heart like a
DECAL, smoothing out the bubbles with
GUSTO.

Empty

VAPID conversation, nothing to
SHARE, empty air from empty conversation
OUGHT to bother him. He leads
HER ON, all the same.

Polaroids

ALBUM in the mind conjures photos of
GHOUL and angel alike.
LOOPY from remembered adrenaline, the
STUMP of amputated chances still itches.
