Playing with fire

Shake the snake and break it, DRUID!
SWELL, pour out all its fluid.
Once nailed to the stake, the SNAKE,
CRUELly treated, may prove devil’s fruitcake.

  1. Interesting that you should ask. I thought I knew and then when I went to check after your query I found that it seems to be called both devil’s fruit cake and devil’s food cake. I like Nigella Lawson’s comment on it: ‘Forget the name, this cake is heavenly.’ It’s a very rich chocolate cake (though the ‘crumb is fluffy’) with thick chocolate icing.
Of course the cake in the poem is a somewhat different idea! LOL
