What’s a devil’s fruitcake? I’m hoping for some delightful Kiwi idiom I don’t know.
Interesting that you should ask. I thought I knew and then when I went to check after your query I found that it seems to be called both devil’s fruit cake and devil’s food cake. I like Nigella Lawson’s comment on it: ‘Forget the name, this cake is heavenly.’ It’s a very rich chocolate cake (though the ‘crumb is fluffy’) with thick chocolate icing.
Of course the cake in the poem is a somewhat different idea! LOL
That made me laugh. When I googled cursorily before I asked you, I found only devil’s food cake and I thought “he must mean something else”.
